Frequently Asked Questions About Eyecare

Is the Eye test covered by Medicare?

Yes, we bulk bill so there is no out of pocket cost for your eye test.

Why do I need an eye test?

Regular, routine eye tests are important, regardless or your age or physical health. During a comprehensive eye test your Optometrist not only checks your prescription for glasses or contact lenses but also checks your eyes for common eye disease such as cataract, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Other diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure can also be picked up through an eye test with your optometrist at Alpine Eyecare.

In children vision is closely linked to the learning processes. Children who have undetected vision problems often have trouble with their schoolwork. Many children experiencing vision problems don’t complain of this because they don’t know what ‘normal’ vision looks like. So an eye test with your optometrist before commencing school is important. Call us today to make an appointment to get a FREE eye test.

How long does and Eye test take to do?

A general eye examination consultation takes around 20-30 minutes.

How often should I have an eye test?

Everyone should have an eye test from their optometrist every two years. Sometimes more frequent tests are recommended if you’re at higher risk to monitor your eye health or any eye conditions. At Alpine Eyecare, Myrtleford, we will let you know how often an eye test is required for your eye needs.

Caring for your glasses

Your glasses should be cleaned regularly. We include a microfiber cleaning cloth and lens spray bottle with glasses that we sell so that you are able to care for your glasses. The cleaning cloth can be used to wipe away finger marks and minor dirt and dust, however we recommend washing them when they are very dirty.

Don’t use your t-shirt to clean your glasses. While you may think it does a great job and is convenient, over time it will damage and scratch your lenses. We recommend using the microfiber cloth and lens spray that we provide. It’s a great idea to get a few cloths and keep them in a few different places such as in your car, bag, office drawer or bedside table to quickly and easily clean your glasses as needed.

How long will it take for my glasses to arrive?

It generally takes around 7-10 working days from us ordering your glasses to them being ready for you. We can of course put a rush order on jobs if they are urgently required in situations such as current glasses being broken.

Why wear sunglasses?

Wearing sunglasses is extremely important to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Research shows that almost 60% of Australians believe that it is only the midday sun that poses the greatest risk but this is not the case. Your eyes are vulnerable to UV exposure at any time of the day and any time of the year.

Accumulated UV exposure can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration (a leading cause of blindness), pterygium (a fleshy growth on the eye), solar keratopathy, and skin cancer of the eyelids and around the eyes?

Not all sunglass lenses are the same. The quality of UV protection doesn’t relate to the darkness of the lenses. In Australia we have Australian Standards for UV protection and glasses are placed in category 2, 3 or 4. This is why it is important to buy sunglasses that meet these standards. Glasses bought from Bali for example are not made to these standards and don’t offer your eyes any UV protection.

All UV eye exposure, regardless of how short, adds up in the long term so it is important to wear suitable UV protective lenses when outside.
